News Platforms for 8 Local Media Outlets

Web DevelopmentWordPressCMSMedia

Results

  • Delivered 8 independently manageable news websites, each with its own WordPress CMS, within an 8-week timeline
  • Editorial staff can add and change pages, menus, images, and social feeds themselves, with no developer needed for routine updates
  • Added newsroom-specific features: live radio streaming, byline or anonymous ('By our reporter') publishing, and search by topic, writer, region, or event
  • Handed over with staff training, English-language user manuals, and full source code, so each outlet's team owns their platform going forward

The problem

Eight local media outlets, based in communities along Tanzania's Kwakuchinja, Nyerere Selous–Udzungwa, and Amani Nilo corridors, needed a professional, reliable way to publish news online. None of them had an in-house technical team, so whatever was built had to be run day-to-day by editorial staff, not developers.

What we built

Over an 8-week engagement, we designed, built, and deployed a WordPress-based news platform for each of the 8 outlets:

  • Responsive, fast-loading sites with custom post types and multiple page layouts, built to load quickly even on slower connections.
  • Editor-friendly CMS - content managers can add or change menus, pages, tabs, links, images, and social media feeds themselves, and manage admin and content-editor user roles, without routine developer involvement.
  • Reporter bylines - stories can be published under a reporter's real name or anonymously as "By our reporter," giving newsrooms flexibility on sensitive stories.
  • Live radio streaming embedded directly on the site for outlets with a radio component.
  • Search and discovery by news category, topic, writer, resource type, event, or region, plus a newsletter sign-up for latest news.
  • Social integration - social sharing including Twitter share-by-text-selection, a live Twitter feed by handle or hashtag, and integrated maps, email, and contact forms.
  • Visitor analytics - traffic trends, time spent on content, and audience demographics (including gender) to help each newsroom understand and improve how their content performs.
  • Security, backups, and compliance - scheduled backups, regular security patching, and cookie/consent handling aligned with anti-spam and data-protection standards.

Results

Each outlet was handed a fully tested, independently manageable news website, along with staff training, English-language user manuals, and the complete source code - so day-to-day publishing and content updates don't depend on us.
